Mental health isn’t widely understood. Some people think ‘you’re exaggerating too much’, ‘it’s all in your head’, when people speak about their illness. Unfortunately, mental illness does exist. Mental illnesses are illnesses that affect how someone thinks and acts, and they even affect a person’s life routine.
Having a mental illness differs a lot from states such as stress, worry, fear, exhaustion. Those mentioned moods come and go, but mental illness is chronic – it’s there for a long period.
People suffer in silence
People also think that because someone is laughing or smiling, they’re not suffering from a mental illness. That is completely wrong. People fear rejection, so they suffer in silence. They prefer to struggle than get ridiculed.
Next time you see decline of personal care and a change of personality in someone, make sure to ask them how they’re doing. Be there for them, be respectful and be understanding. Be patient.
