Being Alone
“Arms wide open, I stand alone
I’m no hero and I’m not made of stone.”
Five Finger Death Punch
As I sat listening to music while I tried to enjoy my morning coffee, this line hit me like a truck. It hit home in a way that music generally doesn’t affect me.
Even lyrics can affect you
I’ve suffered from depression for at least 15 years, maybe longer. For 13 of those years I always had my mother to open up to and seek support. But then she passed away. I’ve never been close to the rest of my family and I’m reserved about opening up to the few friends I have. I’m sure they would try to help me if I opened up or dropped the mask I wear but that involves leaving myself vulnerable.
But instead I soldier on, fighting this battle alone, hoping for someone to “have my back” so to speak but too afraid to ask.
It’s haunting how something as simple as the lyrics in a song can affect you.
