I’m about to make a point. It’s one I learnt the hard way over the last year. Now it may not be a popular one but I’m saying it anyway.

React (1) - How many other people have to suffer in silence? How many people have to lose their battle before people realise how far a kind gesture can go?

I’m going to give you some real life scenarios. Be honest with yourself when you read them:

A person loses a parent and their behaviour becomes aggressive. Do you tolerate it?

A person has cancer and they start treating their family and friends poorly. Do you say something?

A person gets dumped by their partner and begins to drink excessively. Would you help them?

A person is being bullied for not following the status quo. Do you speak up for them?

A person loses their son to suicide. Do you offer to help them make it to the next day?

A person is struggling with infertility. Do you comfort them?

Stigma

Now if one of the people mentioned above were to experience a mental illness as a result of their traumas, how would you treat them?

Now what if you didn’t know about why they have a mental illness. Would you still offer them the kindness you would show the people above?

I am making a point about stigma. I have experienced a number of traumas, but when I look at the number of people who know about my illness, few have shown me kindness. Because I don’t share those experiences, I am not seen as having a valid reason to have a mental illness. But for me, to share is to re-live. No thanks. No I don’t expect help, but I also don’t expect to be isolated, belittled or told that others have it worse.

People generally distance themselves from debbie downers. But when someone is reacting because of their mental illness and are not seen as having a valid reason for it, they’re seen as a nasty piece of work instead of someone going through a rough time. Ever had a panic attack and someone tries to have it out with you? It’s a bloody nightmare!

How many other people have to suffer in silence? How many people have to lose their battle before people realise how far a kind gesture can go? Just a simple smile 🙂

P.S. the boots were a gift for how well I have been handling my illness. I love them.

  1. Those people are “geniuses”,who belittle you and reduce your condition to almost nothing, through comparison which is always unscientific and irrational.Common-nonsense reasoning. One must keep away from such GENIUS minds.
