One cloudy day, on a train platform in a galaxy not too far away…
Just to get on a train
It had taken everything in me just to stand where I was. Every ounce of energy and motivation to get out of bed, get washed and dressed and go out into the masses to do something as simple as jump on a train. It was much easier slowly drowning in the waves of my own depressive thoughts, so much energy to swim to the surface.
The reason. My dad was recovering from another operation. I knew he would look a bit more frail than the last time I had seen him. I knew that once again I would be grateful that he’s still here. And once again I knew that everything would change a bit more. A step closer to the end … maybe.
What if I didn’t get on the train and turned round and went straight home, maybe everything would be OK? Maybe none of it would be happening if only I could just safely cocoon myself away?
But there will always be another train and what if this is the last opportunity I have to see my Dad? What if I just stood here and closed my eyes, would no one see me and everything be OK still?
Light comes through
Fear takes a firm grip of my mind. So many thoughts. Too many thoughts. My chest tightens. I find it hard to breath.
Ingrained routine kicks in. I count to ten repeatedly, blinking away the tears hoping that no one noticed. I touch the wall behind me. Grounding myself in the moment. This time will pass … beautifully? My heart is beating so fast I’m pretty sure it could burst out and fly up into the atmosphere.
I look up and notice that the sun is behind two clouds yet its light is still coming through. The clouds gradually part and the sun beams down. In this moment it’s beautiful and glorious.
Even when it’s cloudy, the sun is still there just waiting for a chance to shine. Just one observation, one thought changed everything. I realised that this is my opportunity to bring my light into my Dad’s world. Things got better.
We all go through cloudy moments in life but the sun is always there waiting to shine. We as people are the same, our light still shines brightly even when it’s cloudy.
