Children are amazingly perceptive. A few weeks ago I was out with my family and had a panic attack going into a crowded area.
I try my best to remove myself away from my children when I can feel these things happening, as I worry about how it affects them. My son saw my panic attack, though.

My son saw my panic attack. Children are amazingly perceptive. I tried my best to remove myself, as I worry about how it affects them, but my son saw my panic attack.

Afterwards, I apologised to him, told him how much I loved him, and tried to explain my behaviour in an age-appropriate way.

“It’s ok, mum. I have lots of feelings sometimes and can’t control them too. I love you.”

It’s not just what he said, but how he said it. He empathised with me, and tried to relate to me so that I didn’t feel bad. I have never been prouder of my boy.

He has EMPATHY.

Some people are probably reading about how my son saw my panic attack and thinking, “Oh that poor kid”. But, our son knows he can always talk to us about anything. He knows we will always be honest with him. He knows we have his back.

In a world full of struggles, a little boy with a big heart empathises with those around him ❤
