Anyone who has had a mental health condition will know the stigma that comes with it. For many though this stigma is only there due to a lack of knowledge or appreciation if what mental illness is really like.
We use the words depressed, ocd, anxiety etc with dual meanings, because of this some people do not really appreciate the vast difference there is between feeling depressed due to a negative experience in your life, and suffering from long term depression. The differences far out number the similarities.
However it can be difficult to explain these differences, sometimes visuals do a much better job. That is why we challenged you to submit your best artistic visions of what people don’t see with mental illness.
Below are the results:
“dissociated… it is a self portrait that represents the struggle to connect to myself or other people as someone with borderline personality disorder”
“The Struggle illustrates the overwhelming feeling of being out of your depth, of sinking and feeling that a void is opening up within you”
“This a picture i drew about 6 years ago when I was suffering with depression. Thankfully I beat it, but still feel this was a good representation of how i felt.”
“If you only knew inside my mind: There is a monster inside me, sucking the life out of me, I am screaming from the inside. I am not okay, can you not see how much pain I really am in, if you only knew inside my mind”
“the energy to live life is all so consuming, sucking me dry, I want to sleep this this feeling passes”
“This is my interpretation of what I feel it’s like to live with OCD. To me the intrusive thoughts and urges to do the compulsions feels like an all consuming burning that never goes away.”
“Scratched: When one person would simply take deep breathes to control the emotions, another would claw at her skin till she was able to breath from underneath…”
“The Demon in me: Eating disorders are not always about Anorexia and being emaciated, it is estimated that of those with eating disorders”
We are looking to produce a round two of this project,
